报告题目：Solar flares observed in white light and in the EUV

报告摘要：The white-light flare phenomenon is still both important and perplexing. In this presentation I describe recent flare results mainly from SDO's HMI and EVE instruments. Specifically HMI (with STEREO) has allowed us to measure the absolute height of one white-light flare, SOL2011-02-24.  EVE is providing the first systematic EUV spectra of the Sun as a star, and the data confirm the clear association of He II and other low-excitation lines with the impulsive phase of a flare. EVE is complementary to the SDO imaging observations with AIA and HMI, and thus provides a useful link to observations of stellar flares.  I discuss the some of the EVE observations of flares and CME-related dimmings. The data have provided a severe negative test of the Orrall-Zirker proposal for the detection of high-energy particles via the wings of the He II 304 A line.
