摘 要: I will present the thermal, dynamical, and ionization state of the gas regions where the initial conditions of star formation (SF) are set in galaxies. Then I will show how these are dramatically altered by the large CR energy densities expected in merger/starbursts, amounting to a physical, extinction-free, star-formation feedback mechanism. This powerful feedback, by altering the SF initial conditions also alters the gravitational fragmentation properties of dense H2 clouds, leading to a top-heavy stellar Initial Mass Function (IMF). The latter is of tremendous importance for cosmological structure formation.
