报告题目：Airships as Stratospheric Observatories

　　摘    要：Since the 18th Century airships (mechanically propelled balloon platforms) have been lofted to great heights for practical applications: travel, reconnaissance, and scientific exploration. Today's airships are potentially amenable for use as stratospheric platforms both for down-looking (earth science resource and pollution monitoring) and up-looking (as a stratospheric platforms for space science). Such astronomical platforms may be motored or tethered and may be retractable or expendable. Dr. Lord will talk about a recent Keck Institute for Space Science Study on the subject. Within the talk he will contrast stratospheric advantages of airships with those of NASA's SOFIA Observatory.
