报告题目:The WIYN Observatory in Transition: Prospects for an Exciting Future
报 告 人:Eric Hooper (University of Wisconsin-Madison)
摘 要:The 3.5-meter WIYN telescope on Kitt Peak, Arizona, USA has an opportunity to welcome new partners for the first time in its 20 year history. There is a possibility that Nanjing University may join the partnership, and indeed several local observers already have used the facility. This talk will present an overview of the observatory, its instrumentation, and showcase a few science projects conducted with the observatory. WIYN's instrument suite takes advantage of its excellent image quality and large field of view with both imagers and spectrographs. There are both near-infrared and optical imagers; the optical imager will soon undergo an upgrade to increase its field of view to 40 arcmin X 40 arcmin. A key speciality of the observatory is fiber spectroscopy, including a configurable multi-object system with a 1 degree patrol field, and three integral field units (IFUs). These instruments support a wide variety of science programs, including solar system, stars, galactic, and extragalactic by faculty, scientists, and graduate students (approaching 70 Ph.D. dissertations) at the partner institutions. WIYN continues to look to the future, with an exciting new state-of-the-art instrument in the early planning stages.
