Title:Test and Application of the Magneto-Frictional Method in MPI-AMRVAC for Modeling Nonlinear Force-free Field in the Corona

Abstract:We implement the magneto-frictional method in the Message Passing Interface-Adaptive Mesh Refinement Versatile Advection Code (MPI-AMRVAC). The semi-analytical Low and Lou solution and the Titov-Demoulin model are adopted to test the performance of the magneto-frictional method. We use the fourth order central difference scheme to advance the numerical iteration. The initial condition is always provided by the potential field. Various boundary conditions have been tested, ranging from the ideal cases where all the bound-aries are assigned with the semi-analytical models, to realistic cases where only the magnetic field on the bottom boundary is known. We find that the code could reconstruct the reference model both in the Cartesian and Spherical geometries. The combination of the parallelization and adaptive mesh refinement abilities of the code allows us to model a large volume with high spatial resolutions. We tentatively apply the method to observations, where the bottom boundary is provided by the vector magnetic field observed by the Helioseismic and Magnetic Imager on board the Solar Dynamics Observatory.
