Abstract:As galaxies living in massive dark matter haloes, giant elliptical galaxies are unique laboratories for the theory of galaxy evolution. Under the promising “two-phase” formation scenario of massive elliptical galaxies, host dark halo mass (environment) is important in shaping them. Yet, clear evidence of such environmental dependence is still lacking. With the help of deep, multi-band images of the Hyper-Suprime Camera (HSC) survey, we find that the average structures of massive galaxies in low and high mass haloes show subtle, but systematic difference. When matched using mass enclosed in the central 100 kpc, the central galaxies of massive haloes on average have a more flattened profile, which is consistent with a richer merger history. Meanwhile, when they are matched using the mass within the inner 10 kpc (proxy of mass formed through dissipative process at high-z), the ones in more massive haloes display much more significant outer envelope. We suggest that the detailed mass profiles and relations among masses within different apertures can help us get more insights of the recent assembly history of these galaxies.

Besides the 1-D mass profiles, I will also discuss other interesting applications of HSC data on the topics of massive galaxy evolution.
