题目:Revealing the Hidden Baryons: Emission from the Cosmic Web in TNG100
摘要:Galaxy surveys over the past few decades have revealed the web-like structure of the nearby Universe. Cosmic filaments, chains of over-density connecting galaxy clusters, encompass a growing mass fraction as the Universe evolves and reach nearly half of the total mass budget at z = 0. In addition to dark matter and galaxies, filaments also host shock-heated gas enriched with metals. Most of this gas resides in the warm–hot intergalactic medium (WHIM) phase, with temperatures of 10⁵–10⁷ K and densities below 10⁻⁴ cm⁻³, making it extremely difficult to observe directly. Recent X-ray observations have revealed faint emission from the WHIM in cosmic filaments, yet discrepancies persist between the observed and simulated gas temperatures and densities. In this work, we use high-resolution cosmological simulations from the IllustrisTNG project to characterize the diffuse gas surrounding a massive cluster pair. By constructing surface-brightness maps for key UV and soft X-ray emission lines, we find that a substantial fraction of the total emission originates from gas located outside halos. These results highlight the role of the inter-halo environment in tracing the missing baryons and provide guidance for the design and interpretation of future observations targeting filamentary WHIM emission.
