Title:Uncovering hidden galaxy growth in the early Universe
报告人:Jacqueline Hodge 副教授(Leiden Observatory)
Abstract:A substantial fraction of the Universe's star formation is heavily obscured by dust, and this basic fact has long hindered the development of a comprehensive picture of galaxy evolution. Now, thanks to powerful telescopes at (sub-)millimeter and infrared wavelengths, including the Atacama Large Millimeter Array (ALMA) and the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST), we are gaining an increasingly direct view of this hidden star formation — as well as the cold gas fueling it — in galaxies in the early Universe.
In this talk, I will present ALMA+JWST imaging of some of the dustiest galaxies in the Universe, finally revealing their stellar and dust structures for the first time nearly 30 years after their discovery. I will also discuss our efforts to detect and resolve the cool gas reservoirs driving their growth, and the constraints these observations place on resolved star formation laws. Finally, I will show how these multi-tracer studies can now be extended into the first billion years after the Big Bang, providing new evidence for the extremely rapid assembly of the first galaxies. I will conclude by discussing the implications of these results for our understanding of early galaxy formation, and look ahead to ALMA2040 and the next generation of observations needed to resolve the cold Universe.
