报告题目:Waves and structures in terrestrial quasi-parallel shocks

报告摘要:At the Earth’s bow shock,the co-existence of incoming and shock reflected particles leads to rich waves and instabilities from fluid to electron scales,forming a turbulent foreshock region. In this presentation,we will introduce basics and some recent progress on understanding these physical processes. An example common pathway starts from ion-ion two stream instabilities,which excite Ultra Low Frequency waves at scales of 10 ion inertia lengths or larger with typical frequencies of 30 s or 3 s in the spacecraft frame. Such waves may further grow into large-amplitude magnetic structures,which behave like small shocks and generate waves at smaller scales,e.g.,1-Hz whistler waves. Distortions of magnetic fields in these waves and structures lead to formation of thin current sheets,where reconnection may occur and facilitate the energy conversion. Utilizing observations and kinetic simulations,we are able to get hints on how each process happens and reveal their associated interactions with particles.
